Amazon Lash Products - The Do’s & Don’ts of Affordable Lash Products
Amazon is such a great tool for lash artists and non-lash artist alike! But sometimes, the cost of the product does have a real effect on the quality. When starting out in the lash world, or even if you are a veteran lash artist, it can be tough justifying spending massive quantities of your hard earned money on something as seemingly simple as lash products, however, there are some products that you simply may have to splurge on. It can be tempting to find those more expensive lashing requirements (I’m looking at you adhesive) from a cheaper source, such as Amazon, but this could actually be causing you more harm than good. I am here today to help you in determining what products are safe to buy from Amazon to help you save a few bucks on product each month, and others that I recommend you fully invest your money on.
First of all, let’s discuss what you should be purchasing from reputable, high quality lash brands. Despite being a higher price point, products such as adhesive, lashes and liquids (cleanser, remover, primer, bonders, etc) should all be purchased from an actual lash brand to ensure that you are receiving the best quality products. As lash artists we want to take pride in our work, but when we are using less-than-amazing products we are working at a disadvantage.
The lesser of all evils of Amazon lash products when it comes to the list above, could be lash extensions. Most lash extensions are made from a synthetic mink thermoplastic called polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) that is dyed and heated to create a super black, strong holding curled lash extension. This means that an extension looks just as good long after shedding, as it does on the day that you placed it. The same can not necessarily be said, however, for cheaper extensions purchased from Amazon. These may lose their curl, have a shiny, plasticy look to them, have an extremely sticky strip that makes it extremely challenging to create good fans, and/or additional challenges that will affect the quality of your set. Perhaps there are some decent lashes that can be found on the site, but I have not yet come across any such lashes.
When it comes to Amazon liquids, and specifically adhesives, I would highly recommend against using on your clients. Many of the adhesives found on the site are lacking in transparency regarding the details on the adhesive. Because professional grade adhesives go through various testing and approval, the ingredients have been regulated to ensure their safety for use on your clients’ eyes, whereas cheaper adhesives can be riskier due to lack of testing and may contain unsafe ingredients such as formaldehyde and latex. These adhesives also tend to have a thicker viscosity and therefore have a much longer dry time than most professional quality adhesives.
Now just because there are some not-so-great Amazon options for lash products, there are a few products that are an absolute go to for lash artists at a reasonable price! I typically go to Amazon for single use disposable products such as lash wands, lip applicators, microswabs, and under eye gel pads. You can also purchase add ons for your clients such as collagen lip masks, face masks, hand massages, and more, which are also great in keeping your client from talking & wiggling around during the service. These products found on Amazon are just as good as professional quality at a much more reasonable price. We go through these products soooo quickly as most of them are disposed of after each client so it doesn’t make sense to invest so much of your revenue into these types of products.
